Looking after your brace during Covid-19

How to keep my mouth and fixed or removable brace healthy during the Covid-19 lockdown

Hopefully, it’ll not be too long before we see you all at Battle Hill Dental Practice to check your orthodontic braces and get going again with your treatment, but in the meantime……

General advice to keep your mouth and teeth healthy

  • Brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes twice a day
  • Use a pea size amount of toothpaste
  • Angle your toothbrush at 45degrees to the gum line. Use either a small side to side or circular motion.
  • Never scrub too hard as this may result in sensitivity and sore gums
  • Continue to brush methodically the inside, outside and chewing surfaces of your teeth
  • Spit out the toothpaste, do not rinse. This leaves a protective coating of toothpaste on your teeth
  • Remember to use your floss and interdental Tepe brushes before you brush. 1 daily. Preferably at night.
  • If you have lapsed, you may experience bleeding gums or see blood when you spit out. Please try to continue with your twice daily toothbrushing, flossing and interdental Tepe brushes and you should hopefully see that this bleeding subsides.

Fixed Braces Advice

  • Exemplary oral hygiene – brushing 3 times a day for at least 2 minutes (time yourself!!!) with a fluoride toothpaste and your standard toothbrush, followed by interproximal brush use. As an adjunct, use of a fluoride mouth rinse eg. Fluoriguard (225ppm) once a day at a different time to your toothbrushing to get maximum protection
  • Ideally use disclosing tablets, before or after brushing to see if there are any areas of your mouth and fixed brace that you are missing when brushing.
  • Low sugar diet – Where possible avoid all snacking on sugars and drinks with ADDED SUGAR. Fizzy drinks should be avoided in particular.
  • Avoid hard, sticky and hard foodstuffs that could break the brace wire, fracture brackets (debond) off a tooth or break your removable appliance/retainer

Removable Braces Advice

  • Continue to wear as advised, normally full-time wear 24/7
  • Please continue to remove your appliance at least twice a day to thoroughly clean your teeth and the appliance and ideally after each meal
